Issues

We face many challenges in the 21st Century. However, by understanding the issues and options we can make informed choices. This section provides overviews of complex topics and links to more detailed information.

As consumers, we make choices every day about what we eat, what we buy, where we visit, how we live...These choices have repercussions on the world we live in and the other people we share it with. As the population grows and demand on resources becomes greater it becomes harder to maintain our standard of living without sacrificing something. It is the hope of the Temperate Forest Foundation that each citizen make informed decisions with respect to these choices.

The Temperate Forest Foundation is committed to the principles of sustainable development, a concept defined in the 1987 World Commission on Environment and Development report (commonly known as the Brundtland Report) as, "meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."

Forests play an important part in our lives; we utilize wood and wood products everyday, we use wood to build our homes and places of business, and we use wood for fuel. Besides using it as just a resource, forests also provide numerous other benefits; aesthetic and emotional. They are places of repose and recreation, they are systems filtering our water and providing habitat for wildlife. Wood is the one truly ecological and sustainable resource.
