Morgan Holen was born in Monroe, Louisiana and developed a passion for forestry early in life as her Dad pursued his own career in the wood products industry. Morgan's family moved from Louisiana to Oregon to Washington, but no matter where she lived or what age she was, Morgan spent nearly every weekend in the woods or in the mill. Morgan's parents taught her about conservation and utilization and now Morgan hopes to teach others about sustainable forest management.
When Morgan went to college she realized it was in her blood to become the fourth generation in her family to pursue a career in forestry, and the second to graduate from the College of Forest Resources at the University of Washington. Her undergraduate education included ten weeks of class in the forest, two summers examining Environmental Impact Statements and Habitat Conservation Plans as an interning law clerk, and a senior project in which Morgan was hired to develop options for providing public access to 15-acres of urban forestland. While her parents encouraged a future in environmental policy after graduation, Morgan sought out fresh powder at 11,000 feet elevation before returning to school a year later to continue her studies in forest science.
Morgan enrolled in the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies in 2002 to continue to study under Dr. Chadwick D. Oliver, a member of the Foundation's Board of Directors and Morgan's professor and mentor, who transferred to Yale from the University of Washington. While earning her Master of Environmental Management, Morgan's studies focus on forest stand dynamics, species diversity and evolution, and forest science and management. In the summer between her first and second year, Morgan was an intern for the Foundation, completing four Teachers' Tours. For her student project, Morgan worked on developing a script for A Forest Journey, the Foundation's first DVD. Morgan joined the Foundation full- time as Product-Market Development Manager and Chief Science and Technology Officer immediately following her May 2004 graduation from Yale.
