Dinner
at Southern Forest Heritage Museum
Long Leaf, LA
Long
Leaf, Louisiana is a restored sawmill and town built in 1892.
Arriving at Long Leaf, we enjoyed a great dinner with beer and wine
Don
Powell discusses the museums relics from the past,
like these saws from the 'pre-chainsaw' days and this shingle maker.
...heading
down the hill toward the commissary, we begin our tour
We
took a ride through the forests on a restored track...
The
museum has three old steam engines, and 'Clyde' a railroad skidding machine from
the early days
Henry
Taves shows off a recently restored steam engine
The
old sawmill provides a great contrast for the teachers,
who will be visiting an extremely modern facility in the morning
The
museums first job was to reclaim the mill back from the surrounding forest
We finished up in the commissary, looking at exhibits and shopping
Later that evening...
Jimmy
Culpepper introduces the Project Learning Tree program to the teachers with the
help of Cindy Ybos
The
first evening the teachers participated in a PLT activity
about the wise use of natural resources
There
were all given a PLT certificate and workbook during the tour,
and also a sheet connecting tour stops to related activities in the book
