Simpson Call Owl

Wildlife biologist Keith Hamm explains how they catch the owls with the intent of marking them to keep track of their population fluxuations.
 

 

Northern Spotted owls were thought to live only in "old growth" forests. However, thousands are thriving in second and third growth forests. They need different structures of habitat at various stages of their life cycle. Simpson Redwoods has the best information available on this species which is listed under the Endangered Species Act. Habitat conservation plans (HCPs) are used by companies like Simpson so they can continue to provide habitat for the owls while managing their forests.
