All 2003 Southeast Region Teachers' Tour participants
were lodged at the Hampton Inn &
Suites in Fernandina Beach, Florida. We started off the tour with an
orientation on Wednesday evening followed by a dinner at the Dee Dot Timberlands
south of Jacksonville.
Teachers registered for the tour as they arrived in Fernandina beach throughout Wednesday afternoon. For teachers arriving from out of state, shuttle service was provided from the airport to the hotel by Florida Division of Forestry.
The
tour began with an orientation for all participants. Foundation president, Bob Legg
introduced welcomed teachers, introduced tour hosts and gave an overview of the
tour. Teachers introduced themselves before we boarded our trusty tour bus for
dinner at Dee Dot.
The opening night's dinner for Teachers' Tour participants was sponsored by Dee
Dot Timberlands and was hosted at Fort Davis on the Timberlands' property.
Dee Dot Timberlands holds 45,000 acres of non-industrial private forest south of Jacksonville. Their forest management practices exemplify the concept of forest stewardship.
Teachers enjoyed a BBQ dinner. The sky was showering but teachers were able to take cover in the spacious confines of the lodge filled with hunting memorabilia and on the lodge's porch where they had a view of the lake and the many species of wildlife inhabiting it.
