Teachers' Tour participants
were lodged at the Park Plaza Vancouver
Airport Conference Resort. Teachers arrived at the hotel throughout the
day from all over North America and registered for the tour in our conference
room.
The opening orientation
began at 4PM in
the conference room with a welcome by foundation president, Bob Legg accompanied
by an introduction to the tour and fellow participants.
After this short orientation we headed to the University of British Columbia's (UBC)
Forest Sciences Centre for a briefing by Sandy McKellar and Steve Baumber on Western Canada's biological/geological/climatic zones, the forest's role in
the economy, sustainable forestry, and wood science. This gave teachers a
framework for the rest of the tour.
Following
Sandy and Steve's presentation we crossed campus to the Cecil Green Mansion for
a relaxing dinner on the patio overlooking English Bay.
Peter Lang of the Western Red Cedar Lumber Association (which sponsored all of
the tour's meals) gave a brief welcoming
address after dinner.
