Choices in Building Materials

Resource URL:
Description: Every building product we use in our homes comes from a natural resource. Our homes and buildings are made of steel, lumber (wood), concrete, and aluminum, which bring us products such as windows, walls, floors, doors, ceilings and roofs. But getting thse resources out of the ground and into our homes impacts our environment. We must ask how much the extracting, manufacturing, and recycling of a product impact our air, water, the earth, and us. Does it depend on nonrenewable energy sources for manufacturing? Does the manufacturing emit gases which damage lakes and the atmosphere? CHOICES is full of information to help answer some of these questions including which building materials cause the least burden on the environment, where each material is best suited, how we can conserve valuable energy, which natural resources are renewable and sustainable and which are not. If we use this information, we can make wise choices and being to own responsibility for the environmental impacts of our choices.
