Review & Evaluation

Saturday morning is when we all met for a closing presentation by Bob Legg and evaluations by the teachers.  This was an exciting part of the tour, where teachers shared their thoughts and the perceptions they had before and after the tour. And we finally said goodbye to our new friends...

Below are the pictures and some of the responses from the teachers in reply to: What did you enjoy about this program and What new perceptions do you have...?

Teacher: John Morse, Sponsor: Rugg Lumber Co.

The largest reward for me personally was acquiring the knowledge that there exists an effort in our society which is committed to striking at the roots of ignorance through the education of teachers about the critical issues in the forest product industry.

Although I have the good fortune to work in the lumber industry the days here at this program have had a tremendous positive impact on my overall beliefs about how the forest products act in ways which serve society and nature in ways which are beneficial to us all.

Teacher: Kelly Brethet, Sponsor: Canadian Lumbermen's Association

The harvesting process - why they clear cut, select, etc. Which trees they leave standing and why. The research involved and the regulations they have to follow.

Teacher: Melissa Boudreau, Sponsor: Canadian Lumbermen's Association

I suppose in the past my view was that forestry did not practice sustainable development. I was impressed to learn about the management techniques and wildlife considerations.

Teacher: Robert Briehl, Sponsor: Canadian Lumbermen's Association

No strings attached to being here - focus on forests & making a difference in education. Various ways of harvesting, planning future forests, problem solving & sustainable forests. Better insight of forest companies. How to use material in the classroom. Statistics - lumber use. New innovations in global positioning.

Teacher: Karen Wilson, Sponsor: Jackson Lumber Company

The very first day I saw the quote on the board "meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" It has left a lasting impression because I have seen it put into practice. I have been extremely impressed with the way all professionals are trying to insure forestry for the future. Amazed about the amount of technology used in this field.

Teacher: Constance Josvai, Sponsor: Schultz, Syncler & Steele

I am amazed by all the politics involved. There are several agencies involved in forestry! How little I know about the US Forest Industry and how similar some of the industry is the same in both Canada and the US.

Teacher: Dot Schendel, Sponsor: Howard Davidson

I have never met so many personable expert from all fields who shared their knowledge and willingly answered endless questions. I honestly did not realize the details of forest management and how careful those involved are. My info was very out dated.

Teacher: Brigitte Lapierre, Sponsor: Tembec Mattawa

Being from this community, forestry is a huge part of our heritage. I do have a better understanding of the industry and a profound respect for those who continue to work in this field.

Teacher: Julie Gaudreau, Sponsor: Tembec

I honestly thought that the markers simply walked around and picked any tree to be cut down. I didn't realize the full extent of this process.

Teacher: Roger Norton, Sponsor: Rowley Lumber

I was aware of the fact that there were many uses for forest products but not of the immense #. I was also unaware of the great deal of effort it takes to make sure the foests are harvested properly with the care taken for wildlife management.

Teacher: Vince Vergilio, Sponsor: Canadian Lumbermen's Association

I was not aware of how much education and training some of the foresters have. I was also was not aware of how selective they are with the tree cutting.

Teacher: Sandra Fischer, Sponsor: Hamilton - Davison Lumber

Wow! This added that deeper knowledge that I was lacking before this program. For example: evaluating tree, measuring height and diameter, how mills work.

Teacher: James Doucitt, Sponsor: Tembec

I discovered how complicated and technological it is. I always thought it was simple. I also am amazed at the number of steps that are taken to protect and restore the forest.

Teacher: Susan Laberge, Sponsor: Canadian Lumbermen's Association

I really enjoyed the on-site visits where we got to see forestry practices in action. The presentations were very informative and being out in the field made the concepts much clearer.

I am very impressed with the concern for maintaining a balanced ecosystem and with the interaction between the various groups involved in the lumber industry and all aspects of forestry. The more I learned, the more I realized how little I knew.

Teacher: Lisa Romanowski, Sponsor: Tembec

I never really appriciated the diversity found within a forest. More important, before this tour I had no idea how much work and planning goes into all the stages of forest management. Forestry is much more high tech and involved then lever thought. I have a much greater respect and admiration for all those who work in the forestry industry.
